Rheumatoid arthritis or RA, is an autoimmune disease that causes joints in the body to become swollen, inflamed and painful. Autoimmune diseases are one of the great mysteries of medicine that remain unsolved and although many of them are treatable, for the most part, there are no cures. RA can strike at any age, but most commonly occurs in middle age. The disease can be debilitating, depending on how severe it is and how effectively it can be treated. These are the most common signs and symptoms that may signal the onset of rheumatoid arthritis.
