Top 8 HIV/AIDS Risk Factors

Comments Off on Top 8 HIV/AIDS Risk Factors 2094

At one time, AIDS was the top health concern for people who engaged in any of the well-known risk factors. AIDS and the virus that causes it, HIV, are still with us, but do not cause as much concern today compared with just a couple of decades ago. The reason is that AIDS is not considered a terminal disease 100 percent of the time as it was in the years following its discovery. AIDS patients now have a very good chance of long-term survival with the help of new treatments and drugs that have been developed. Even though AIDS does not strike terror into the hearts of the masses quite the way it once did, it’s still a very significant risk that definitely should not be ignored. The following eight risk factors will increase your chance of contracting the virus that causes AIDS.

1. Unprotected Sexual Contact

It’s important to understand that HIV can be passed from one person to another through nearly any type of sexual contact. Even when using condoms, there is no guarantee that the HIV virus will not be passed on, but the chances are dramatically diminished. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you are at risk for AIDS only through vaginal sex, because that could not be further from the truth. Any type of sexual contact should involve the use of condoms of other proven preventive measures.
