Those of us old enough to remember when all of our favorite sweet treats were made with cane sugar may have realized one day that something had changed. Many things we grew up eating just did not taste the same. Eventually it became obvious that the change was the introduction of high-fructose corn syrup as a replacement for sugar that changed the flavor of so many products – and not for the better. The corn industry has teamed up with food manufactures to form a kind of unholy alliance that puts more money in their pockets and puts consumer health at risk. Here are the main reasons you should be concerned about the proliferation of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in so many food products today.

1. Weight Gain

Take a look around you the next time you stop by your local Wal-Mart or supermarket. It’s obvious that the percentage of the population that is overweight or obese has skyrocketed in recent decades. Sugar is surely not something you want to be eating a lot of, but high-fructose corn syrup is even worse. Medial research conducted by Princeton University found that feeding rats HFCS caused them to gain weight 300 percent faster than those that were fed sugar made from fruit.
