When we hear about someone who is planning to lose weight, we often assume they are doing it because of their appearance. We humans are more concerned with our appearance than any other inhabitants of this planet and some of us go to pretty extreme measures to make ourselves look good. There have probably been a million fad diets that have come on gone over the years, and companies promoting diet pills or weight loss programs usually focus on a dieter’s desire to look better by losing weight. As we discover how serious the health risks are from being overweight, we now know there are a lot more good reasons for losing weight than just looking good.

1. Heart health

Being overweight ups your chances of having a heart attack significantly. People who are obese have heart attacks 12 years earlier than others on average. More weight also forces the heart to work harder in order to pump blood through the entire body.
