10 Health Risks From Heavy Drinking

A drink once in a while is certainly not a bad thing. In fact, research in recent years has suggested that drinking occasionally may actually promote good health. There is a segment of the population, however, who are at risk of developing alcoholism and the health problems that result. For those people, putting a drink to their lips is almost like putting a loaded gun to their head. It will certainly take a lot longer for alcohol to kill a person compared to a gun, but it is a very real danger for many. Here are just a few of the risk factors involved with heavy drinking.

1. Cirrhosis

This is the health risk most people probably associate first with heavy drinking, and for good reason. Alcohol adversely affects the liver, which is the organ that is responsible for removing toxins and other harmful substances from the body. Cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver becomes badly scarred from the damage it has to endure from heavy drinking. For reasons that are not completely understood, women are more at risk from this disease than men. It’s also notoriously hard to predict who cirrhosis will affect, since some heavy drinkers never develop it and others who drink much less do.
