Gluten-free is all the rage these days. Supermarket shelves are lined with new products that all boldly proclaim they contain no gluten. For many, going gluten-free is probably more of a fad than anything else, and many of them will probably be back to their old gluten-heavy diet by this time next year. For others, it’s a serious health concern – people with celiac disease for instance. Then there are those who find that eating foods that contain gluten result in unpleasant side-effects. I fall into that category. If I eat gluten I get headaches, but fortunately for me they are not as painful as the excruciating migraines my father suffered with for years before he finally learned that gluten was causing his problem. I really didn’t start having problems until I was into my early forties. I’ve been gluten-free for a number of years now, and am thankful there are so many gluten-free alternatives available these days. Being gluten-free today really doesn’t involve all that much sacrifice, although gluten-free products do tend to be more expensive. Are you allergic to gluten or perhaps just gluten intolerant? The following eight symptoms might be an indication that you are.

1. Migraine headaches

There are probably a ton of reasons people get migraines, but gluten could be one of them. As I mentioned above, my dad suffered for years with terrible migraines, which, oddly enough, tended to hit him on the weekends, particularly on Sunday. He could usually get through the work week just fine, and then we would often find him lying on the floor in a dark room on Sunday because he was in too much pain to do anything else. He was probably into his 60’s before he discovered that gluten was the source of his problem and once he stopped eating it, his migraines went away for good.
